No matter how premium your topcoat is, it can only perform as well as the surface beneath it allows. Monaco’s Surface Primer and Water-Based Undercoat are the unsung heroes of every successful paint project — creating the adhesion, uniformity, and surface stability that your finish coat needs to reach its full potential. Skipping or cutting short the priming process is one of the most common causes of premature paint failure in Uganda’s building projects, leading to peeling, bubbling, flaking, and uneven colour — problems that are entirely avoidable with the correct preparation.
Monaco Surface Primer is formulated to penetrate deeply into new plaster, concrete, and cement render, sealing the surface and creating a consistent base that reduces paint absorption and prevents uneven coverage. Our Water-Based Undercoat is specially designed to work alongside our interior and exterior topcoats, offering fast drying times, excellent coverage, and a low-odour formula that is safe for occupied spaces. Both products are fully compatible with the complete Monaco topcoat range, ensuring system-level performance when used together — coverage that holds, colours that stay true, and finishes that endure far longer than primer-free applications.
Our Benefits
Do I always need to use a primer before painting?
On any new surface — fresh plaster, bare cement, new concrete block, or bare wood — priming is not optional; it is essential. New surfaces are highly porous and will absorb your topcoat unevenly, resulting in patchy coverage, poor colour consistency, and dramatically reduced durability. On previously painted surfaces in good condition, a full primer coat may not always be necessary, but applying Monaco Water-Based Undercoat before your topcoat will significantly improve coverage, colour accuracy, and adhesion — especially when making a significant colour change. Our team is always available to advise on the right preparation process for your specific surface and project type.
What is the difference between Surface Primer and Water-Based Undercoat?
Monaco Surface Primer is a penetrating sealer designed to be the very first coat applied to bare, new, or highly porous surfaces. It soaks deep into the substrate, consolidating the surface and creating a stable, unified base for subsequent coats. Monaco Water-Based Undercoat, by contrast, is applied after the primer and before the topcoat — its role is to build a uniform, slightly filled surface that helps the topcoat achieve maximum coverage and colour accuracy with fewer coats. Think of the Surface Primer as the foundation and the Undercoat as the first floor — both play distinct and important roles in the painting system for optimal results.
How long should I wait between applying primer and topcoat?
Monaco Surface Primer is typically touch-dry within 2 to 4 hours under normal Ugandan temperature and humidity conditions. However, we recommend allowing a minimum of 4 to 6 hours before applying the next coat, and ideally overnight for maximum surface consolidation — especially on new plaster or in humid conditions during the rainy season. Monaco Water-Based Undercoat dries faster, usually within 1 to 2 hours, and you can typically apply your topcoat the same day. Always ensure each coat is fully dry before proceeding — painting over a damp or tacky coat is one of the most common causes of adhesion failure and an uneven final finish.
